Students See Aircraft Assembled and Make Connections at Honeywell and Boeing

Sept. 22, 2015
UA Engineering students take a career-oriented field trip to Arizona aerospace companies.

An “industry trek” in Phoenix and Mesa on September 11 led 32 UA College of Engineering students through the assembly of aircraft parts at Honeywell Aerospace and Boeing Helicopter.

At Honeywell students saw auxiliary power units, or APUs, assembled for 737s and other narrow-body planes and visited a vibration lab and large altitude chamber. Several UA alumni, including Honeywell APU director Ron Rich (BS/ME 1982) were on hand to answer questions.

“The team asked some great questions and left with a good background on careers at Honeywell,” said Rich.

Then it was on to Boeing’s Mesa plant to watch final assembly of Apache helicopters with Wildcat Danielle Craig (BS/ME 2011) of the rotors design unit.

“We hope the Boeing tour gave students new insight into the field of aerospace and rotorcraft engineering,” said Craig.

UA Career Services and the Institute for Career Readiness and Engagement, a program started in 2014 to boost opportunities in Maricopa County for Wildcats, organized the tours.
