Churchill Scholars Collect Their MPhil Diplomas
UA Engineering alumni Travis Sawyer and Jeannie Wilkening were named Churchill Scholars in 2016 for their outstanding academic achievement and proven research talent -- an honor given to only 15 students across the country each year.
Only the third and fourth UA students to receive the award since it began in 1963, both headed to the University of Cambridge in England, where they recently completed one-year master’s degree programs.
They returned to Cambridge to attend July 21 convocation ceremonies and receive their Master of Philosophy degrees from Churchill College.
Wilkening, who studied chemical engineering at UA, researched carbon, sulfur and iron cycling in marshes, and the climate implications thereof, with Alexandra Turchyn at Cambridge, and completed her Master of Philosophy in earth sciences.
Sawyer, who earned his undergrad degree in optical sciences and engineering, completed his Master of Philosophy in physics under Cambridge scientist Sarah Bohndiek.
