Challenger Commander Memorabilia Coming to UA

Memorabilia from the Kennedy Space Museum is making its way to the UA College of Engineering and soon will be on display in the department of aerospace and mechanical engineering. A celebration on Friday, March 29, 2013 will honor astronaut Dick Scobee, whose family has placed the memorabilia on loan to the University of Arizona aerospace and mechanical engineering department.

Francis Richard “Dick” Scobee, a UA aerospace engineering alumnus, commanded the Space Shuttle that launched on January 28, 1986 on a mission to deploy a satellite for studying the approaching Halley's Comet. The Challenger was lost just seconds after liftoff when an O ring seal failed, killing all seven on board.

Scobee, who had served as pilot previously on Challenger’s fifth mission in April 1984, has been quoted as saying, “You have to risk something to gain something.”

Members of the Scobee family –- June Scobee Rogers, widow;  Brig. Gen. Richard Scobee, son; Cristi Scobee, granddaughter; and Dexter Scobee, grandson -- will join the College and AME for a reception and the first viewing of Scobee’s AME memorabilia collection on Friday from 12:30 to 3 p.m. in the AME courtyard at 1130 N. Mountain Ave.

The collection items -- such as Scobee’s bomber jacket, helmet, oxygen mask, slide rule and a signed book from his UA studies -- will remain on display in the AME North Building, Room 310 North.
