Two Engineering Alumni to Compete at Tokyo Olympics
Two systems and industrial engineering alumni will be competing in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. They are among 23 current and former Wildcats who are participating in the games, which begin this week.
Rafael Quintero (Puerto Rico) was a four-time All-American platform diver for the Wildcats from 2013-2016 and was named the Pac-12 Newcomer of the Year during his freshman season. He graduated from the University of Arizona in 2018. He won two Pac-12 platform diving championships and represented Puerto Rico in the 2016 Olympics. Quintero will take part in the 10-meter platform competition in Tokyo.
Edgar Rivera-Morales (Mexico) was an All-American high jumper for the Wildcats in 2011 and 2012. Morales qualified for three All-Conference teams in his career. Morales will compete in the high jump for Mexico.
"I am so proud to have Edgar and Rafael as our SIE alumni," said Young-Jun Son, head of the Department of Systems and Industrial Engineering. "On behalf of all SIE faculty, staff, students, and alumni, I wish them the very best for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. I know all their hard work and sacrifices will pay off greatly."
Quintero is diving on Thursday, August 5 at 11 p.m. MST. Rivera-Morales is jumping on Thursday, July 29 at 5:15 p.m., also MST.
