Outstanding UA Engineering Faculty, Staff Recognized for 2010-11 Achievements
National and international recognition for 2010-11 came from prestigious organizations such as the American Society of Civil Engineers, Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Khon Kaen University in Thailand, Great Minds in Stem, Intel, the Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona and more.
Faculty and staff recognized in 2010-11 included Don Slack, an instructor in the agriculture and biosystems engineering department, who received an honorary doctorate from Khon Kaen University in Thailand.
The Arizona Department of Education 2010 Spotlight on Success award went to the UA College of Engineering program to teach Engineering 102 in high schools statewide. Students in participating schools can earn college credit hours toward an engineering degree at UA. Included in this accolade are Meghan Albert-Powell, Brian Cunningham, Eniko Enikov, Jane Hunter, Mahdi Ganji, Jim Baygents and Jeff Goldberg.
Samy Missoum, Pak Wong and Jonathan Vande Geest of the aerospace and mechanical engineering department were promoted to associate professor with tenure. Jennifer Duan of civil engineering and engineering mechanics and Roman Lysecky of electrical and computer engineering were also promoted to associate professor with tenure.
Marty Pagel, associate professor of biomedical engineering, was recognized as distinguished junior investigator for 2010 by the Arizona Cancer Center.
Jennifer Barton, professor of biomedical engineering, was named a da Vinci fellow for her leadership and resourcefulness in 2010-11.
Achintya Haldar of the civil engineering and engineering mechanics department was named Southern Arizona Engineering Educator of the Year by the Southern Arizona Society of Professional Engineers.
Chandra Desai was named a distinguished member of American Society of Civil Engineers. Recipients of this rare and distinguished award number about 600 in the history of the ASCE. Fewer than 200 of ASCE's 146,000 living members have been made distinguished members.
Eduardo Sáez of the department of chemical and environmental engineering was made a University of Arizona Distinguished Professor for 2011.
Leo Enfield, Marti Martinez and Jesse Stengel of the college's Computer Systems Group received the William Primm Cosart prize.
Marwan Krunz, Ahmed Louri and William E. Ryan were made IEEE fellows for their outstanding work in electrical and electronics engineering.
Michael Marcellin of the electrical and computer engineering department was recognized for earning the following awards and achievements in 2010-11:
- European Union Marie Curie Fellowship, Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona, Barcelona, Spain
- Advisor to the authors of the first place winner of the graduate student paper at the International Telemetering Conference in San Diego, Calif., called "Visually lossless compression based on JPEG2000 for efficient transmission of high resolution color aerial images"
- Advisor to the authors of a first place undergraduate student paper at the International Telemetering Conference in San Diego, Calif., called, "Remote imaging system acquisition (RISA) space environment multispectral imager"
- Advisor to second place undergraduate student paper, "Wireless sensor networks: A grocery store application," at the International Telemetering Conference in San Diego, Calif.
- Award for Excellence at the Student Interface (teaching), UA College of Engineering, May 2010.
Jeffrey Rodriquez and Janet Meiling Wang of electrical and computer engineering won best paper award at the International Symposium for Quality Electronic Design conference for "Robust Gate Sizing by Uncertainty Second Order Cone."
Erica Corral of materials science and engineering won YWCA Tucson's Women on the Move Emerging Leader Award and was named most promising doctoral engineer or scientist by the Hispanic Engineer National Achievement Awards Conference.
