KOLD spotlights U of A mining engineering legacy
Craig M. Berge Dean of the College of Engineering David W. Hahn and Kray Luxbacher, head of the School of Mining Engineering and Mineral Resources, speak to local news station about mining’s place in Arizona’s economy and history.

‘This building was built in 1889 as the School of Mines, so mining has been at the very roots of the University of Arizona,’ says Craig M. Berge Dean David W. Hahn about Old Main.
Craig M. Berge Dean David W. Hahn and Kray Luxbacher, who holds the Gregory H. and Lisa S. Boyce Leadership Chair of Mining and Geological Engineering, appeared in KOLD’s back-to-school segment “Studying Engineering, Mining, and Space.”
“What’s happening in the United States is a recognition that we need to produce more of the critical minerals that we need. We can’t look to foreign sources for that,” Hahn said.
The program showcased the San Xavier Mining Laboratory, a one-of-a-kind facility that provides training for students and professionals with full-scale industry equipment.
“We really bring together all the disciplines the university has to offer to provide comprehensive solutions around mining,” said Luxbacher, executive director and head of the School of Mining Engineering and Mineral Resources.
“We are keen to expand our facilities to create the next workforce for mining.”
