Tournament raises funds and awareness of EWB-UA and its projects, as well as money to send club members to Bolivia over the summer to implement a water distribution system in Marquirivi in the Andes.

The UA student chapter of Engineers Without Borders, EWB-UA, is hosting Frisbee Without Borders this weekend to raise money for its water distribution project in Marquirivi, Bolivia.

The student EWB group organizes a Frisbee tournament every semester, and this semester's competition takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29, at the east end of the UA Mall.

"This event is open to everyone," said Kelsey Newman, biomedical engineering undergraduate and EWB-UA's student council representative. "There is a competitive and a noncompetitive bracket, and teams are 5-9 people. Players can sign up with a team, or as individual players who we will place in teams." All players get a T-shirt.

The Frisbee tournament is a fundraiser that promotes awareness of EWB-UA and its projects while raising money to send club members to Bolivia over the summer to implement a water distribution system in Marquirivi, a small village of about 100 families that lies almost 13,000 feet up in the Andes.

Engineers Without Borders conducts projects in underdeveloped communities, usually to provide better access to clean water. "Our current project is to create a water distribution system in that will give the community access to a distant water source," Newman said. The group also participates in local volunteering and national conferences.

"We will have company sponsorships, and participation is $10 per person," Newman said. "Last semester we had 13 teams and raised over $800." Past sponsors include Bagelry, the UA Residence Hall Association, Yoga Oasis, The Book Stop, Bison Witches, Blue Willow, the Barrio Brewery, Bookmans, and Mrs. Green's World.
