$10,000 From Bayer Funds K-12 Engineering Education and Outreach
Bayer U.S. - Crop Science, Technology and Global Breeding awarded the University of Arizona College of Engineering a $10,000 grant. Local Bayer employees recommended the college as a recipient of a grant, which will be used to support engineering education for high school students.
“We commend organizations like the UA College of Engineering for their outreach to students,” said Matt Lingard, site lead for Bayer’s Marana Greenhouse. “These grants are a part of our ongoing mission to make meaningful investments in the communities where Bayer employees live and work.”
Some of Bayer’s grant supported Summer Engineering Academy, or SEA. SEA consists of weeklong, overnight camps for high school students from all over the United States who want to learn more about engineering. At one of this year’s camps, a representative from Bayer even led a recycling irrigation workshop.
“SEA is very appreciative of the funding provided by Bayer,” said former Summer Engineering Academy director Lori Huggins. “This funding was used to provide curriculum development, an instructor and supplies for our newest camp, Women in Engineering. The high caliber of our camps would not be possible without support from great industry partners like Bayer, which has supported Summer Engineering Academy for two years.”
The Bayer fund will also support training high school teachers for the ENGR 102 HS dual credit program. ENGR 102 HS is a college level, introductory engineering class taught in 34 high schools around the state.
“We are grateful to the Bayer Fund for this generous gift,” said J. Jill Rogers, assistant director for the ENGR 102 high school program. “With this award, the College of Engineering will provide Arizona teachers with the training and materials they need to deliver the ENGR 102 HS course to their high school students.”
In 2019, Bayer Fund awarded more than $1.4 million through this program to nonprofit organizations in rural communities to help address essential needs in Food & Nutrition, STEM Education, and Community Development. Nonprofit organizations across the U.S. have received more than $7 million through this program over the last five years.
